FAES Health Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

I am having trouble logging on to the website, what should I do?
Check your Browser. Microsoft Explorer is compatible, Netscape doesn't always work.

Is there a 'calendar' of administrative requirements?
We recommend the following:

- After enrolling [within first 30 days of entrance to duty], keep your copy of the Election Form as a reminder to renew one month before end of award.
- 21 days after enrollment, make sure you have received your Insurance Card.
- In October, start looking for the Open Season notice. Open Season is the only time to make changes to your coverage plan.
- As soon as your fellowship is renewed, go to the Business Office [10/B1-C18], with your Election Form, to extend your Health Coverage.

Where do I go for the Election of Health Insurance Form?
The Election form is issued by Institute personnel. Contact your AO, IC - if you aren't sure, ask your Sponsor who that person is.

Why do I need to come to FAES to renew? Isn't it done automatically?
Election Forms are used by NIH to obligate the funds for your coverage. Without an up to date copy of the Form, we have no guarantee of payment [FAES is not Federal, so we have no access to the payment system]. Without a new Election Form on file, coverage will automatically terminate as of the last day of the month in which your period of award ends.

We ask that you personally bring the Form to our office so we may review for errors/problems, and to obtain your current address [off and on campus] and phone number. It is also the one time per year we have contact with our subscribers, and is an opportunity for you to share any concerns you may have.

When does my coverage begin?
Your insurance will be effective the date you meet with FAES and all forms are completed by both parties.

Why do I need to walk my Termination Form through FAES when I leave NIH?
If you have Health Insurance coverage through FAES we must sign your Termination Form as part of your exit process. At that time we can inform you about continuing your coverage under COBRA, as well as obtain a forwarding address for mailing/forwarding any correspondence.
